Sunflowers can be big, small, yellow, bronze, and tasty- let's explore them together! Start by getting a closer look at these flowers with microscopes, and learn about sunflower diversity and heliotropism- how sunflowers grow to face the sun! You will get to plant your favorite kind of sunflower to grow at home. You'll also spend time making sunflower snacks for backyard creatures, and sunflower snacks for you! Each adult+child pair of participants will leave with planted sunflowers, a sunflower snack for backyard creatures, and information to keep exploring sunflowers at home.

Butterflies are beautiful and important to our ecosystem, but often struggle due to lack of habitat- how can we help them? You and your child will learn what plants and flowers are important for Minnesota butterflies, and get an amazing up-close look with microscopes. Pot up plants to help caterpillars and butterflies in your backyard, and meet some caterpillars! You'll finish up by searching for butterflies in the Children's Garden, and making a butterfly feeder to hang in your garden. Each adult+child pair of participants will leave with a potted plant, butterfly feeder, and helpful tips to help these insects at home!
Limit 12 adult+child pairs/trios, Marion Andrus Learning Center - Garden Shed

Let's Cook Together! Intergenerational TogetherTime (200-08-04-18)

The best way to "grow" a child's appetite for vegetables is to involve them in the garden-to-table process! In the midst of the growing season, spend some time in the kitchen discovering how wheat grows and making delicious veggie pizzas. You and your child will begin with planting wheat to take home and grow, then try your hand at grinding wheat into flour. Make your own pizza dough, and add fresh healthy veggie toppings. While the pizza bakes, you will have a chance to investigate herbs and make a seed art picture with grains. Each adult+child pair of participants will leave with a belly full of delicious pizza, leftovers (if there are any!), wheat to grow, and a seed art picture.
Limit 12 adult+child pairs/trios, Marion Andrus Learning Center - Harvest Kitchen

Trees are important building blocks for humans as well as many animals. Spend some time together building with tree parts and learning fascinating new facts about these important plants! Start by building miniature "gnome homes" and creating creatures from pinecones. Make a tiny table complete with an acorn tea set. Taking a building break, play a plant parts matching game and spend some microscope time zooming in on tree seeds, leaves, bark and wood. Each participant pair will leave with a gnome home, pinecone creature, tiny table and acorn tea set, and a greater appreciation for trees.
Limit 12 adult+child pairs/trios, Marion Andrus Learning Center - Tree Place
