Immerse yourself in Scandinavian Folk Music during this new camp! Campers will participate in fiddle or recorder workshops, learn how to make and play dulcimers, and participate in folk dance. This camp culminates in a performance for campers’ families and friends. If your child has ever wanted to learn more about folk music, this is their chance! Instructors include Ingela Haaland, Ross Sutter, Sarah Lume, Elias O’Brien, and Carol Sersland. Suitable for ages 9 – 13 years old.

Recorder Prerequisites: Prior experience playing the recorder is not necessary, but some musical training is encouraged. For example, those that play other wind instruments may find the switch to the recorder easy. The soprano recorder is sized to fit children’s hands, but finger dexterity is necessary to cover the holes well and move from note to note. We will learn tunes by ear, by reading music, and by repetition. All of these skills will be developed in our work together. Recorders will be available from ASI if needed.

Fiddle prerequisites: All levels of fiddlers are welcome to this camp. Two instructors will be available to teach all skill levels. Ingela Haaland will lead beginners who have completed at least the equivalent of book 1 of Suzuki method. Elias O’Brien will take those who are farther along with their fiddle skills and who are comfortable learning new melodies and some harmonies. All tunes will be taught by ear. Sheet music will not be used during instruction, but will be sent home along with recordings at the end of camp. Participants must provide their own fiddle.

Campers must bring their lunch and water bottle, and wear clothes appropriate for the outdoors and crafts. Advanced registration is required and closes three weeks before the camp start date.
