AnthroCamp | Kids Out and About Minneapolis/St. Paul

AnthroCamp

At a time when so much is changing, it's more important than ever for kids to understand people: how we create culture, how societies work, and what human skills matter most. AnthroCamp gives students entering grades 5–8 five days of hands-on fun developing human skills — interviewing, drawing, cultural investigation, music, digital culture, an archaeological dig, and fieldwork — all guided by experienced university professors.

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

Looking for a summer activity that helps young people
understand the world—and themselves?

AnthroCamp at Hamline is all about exploring what makes us human. At a time when so much
seems to be changing and we are uncertain what the future will bring, we think it's more
important than ever for young people to understand people—how we create culture, how
societies work, why we do the things we do, and what skills help humans navigate our complex
world. What are the human skills that matter most?

So what exactly IS anthropology?

Think of it as the science of understanding people—all people, everywhere. Anthropologists
study how humans live, what we value, why we make the things we make, play the games we
play—in short, why we're the way we are. Anthropologists learn about the past through digging
things up, study people by talking to them and observing what they do, and seek answers to
questions like why your traditions might differ from your neighbor's. It's detective work for
human culture! And the skills? Keen observation, patience, mapping, making, interviewing,
critical thinking—skills every young person needs for any future. ️

What will your middle-grader actually DO?

They'll explore questions like "Where does the internet actually live?" and "Why do humans
make music?" They'll investigate language, video games across cultures, practice image
making, go on a real archaeological dig on campus, examine casts of bones, and interview people
to collect their stories. Every day they'll document discoveries in their personal field notebook as
they learn to think like an anthropologist!

Five full days at Hamline University in St. Paul!

August 3-7, 2026, 9:00am-4:00pm daily. For students entering grades 5-8. Lunch included in the

questions, and see the world with fresh eyes—all while having summer fun.
