Ome'-Na-Ala Traditional Farm

A new exhibit at the Arboretum called “Omé-Na-Ala, Igbo Traditional Farm,” co-curated by Chidi Chidozie, tells the story of the sacred and vital plants to the Igbo people of Nigeria. The living exhibit, open June 1 through harvest season, will showcase these foods and a scaled-down Igbo village.  Minnesota is home to a thriving Igbo (pronounced “EE-boh”) community that has arrived from Nigeria over the past 40 years. The Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria are an indigenous group with an ancient, deeply rooted history, predominantly residing in the southeastern region of the country, known as Igboland. Historically, the Igbo people operated as self-sufficient farmers and skilled traders. Traditional agriculture was based on a mix of subsistence farming and commerce.
