The International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico is Out of This World

By Meg Brunson

Do you believe in aliens? There are so many theories and questions… if anyone knows for sure, it seems they’re not sharing the evidence… or are they?

Without a doubt the city that knows the most about aliens has to be Roswell, New Mexico. Back in 1947 there was an alleged Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) that crashed just outside of the city limits. There are some very interesting stories about people who had first-hand accounts of what they saw – including debris, and even bodies!

Of course, there are also people who claim it didn’t happen – and some evidence that some of these people may even be trying to cover up what ever did happen…

Visiting the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, New Mexico is an opportunity to review documents, testimony, and accounts from believers and deniers alike. Really assess both sides and come to a conclusion about what really happened back in 1947 – plus the museum has some fun photo ops and pop culture references to aliens and UFOs.

As a homeschooling family – this provided us with a really fun “school assignment” as the kids worked to form their own opinion and then research information to both support and challenge their opinions.

While this is not a “play museum,” it is family-friendly and even the youngest kids enjoyed seeing the various alien displays and were mesmerized by the large display (that lights up, spins, and spews smoke) enough that we were able to read and analyze the various pieces of evidence with the older kids.

And the only thing more fun than the Museum itself, is the gift shop! They had alien-everything: socks, glasses, toys, clothes, books, jewelry, food, and more.

Helpful Hints for Planning your visit

  • There is a parking lot right next to the museum.
  • After visiting the museum you'll want to be sure to visit El Toro Bravo Bakery across the street for some adorable and tasty alien cookies!
  • Just down the street is the only UFO shaped McDonalds in the world – we had to eat there! The part of the restaurant that looks like a UFO has dining areas and a playplace with great space-themed decorations.
  • Roswell is a relatively small city with lots of alien kitsch! Plan to explore the city and take pics with the various aliens around town.

Whether you are a believer or not – the International UFO Museum & Research Center is a fun experience at a super reasonable cost and it’s surrounded by fun alien-themed restaurants, shops, and photo ops!  A perfect unique get away the whole family will enjoy!
