Winter Break– School’s Out Camps at Minnesota Zoo

Join us at the Minnesota Zoo during your Winter Break. Winter Camp is offered December 26-27, 2019 and December 30-31, 2019 for age 4 through 6th grade.

Preschool/Kindergarten

Frozen Dinners – Thursday, December 26, 2019
Pizza or plants? Burgers or bugs? What do animals eat in winter? Finding food is not as easy as going to the grocery store. For animals, who eats who or who eats what may change when the snow and temperature fall. Follow the tracks and find out who made it to spring!

Arctic Attire – Friday, December 27, 2019
Minnesota can be crazy cold, but the there are places where you really need your long underwear! From hot to cold, how an animal beats the heat or breaks the ice depends on what they wear. Discover which animals live where and why the animals that live in the extremes can be very different!

Splash into Winter – Monday, December 30, 2019
Swimming is not just for summer! Join our pool party as we plunge into the watery world of the crazy critters who feel right at home in a pool of ice. Come make new friends and fun discoveries while practicing your waddling!

What’s that on Your Head? – Tuesday, December 31, 2019
Is it a hat? Is it a crown? Or is it just to be cool? Explore the world of those who roam the snow with awesome antlers or high-class horns. Do moose have horns and bison have antlers? Join the expedition and find the answers to these quizzical questions!

 4 years old through Kindergarten (child only classes)
TIMES: 9:30-11:30 a.m.
FEES: Members: $20 per class, Non-members: $25 per class
BEFORE CARE: Offered from 8-9:30 a.m. for the morning camp. $5/day (optional)

Grades 1-3

The theme of these four camps is Winter Photo Safari!
Adventure, animals, fun, and photography!  Join us as we develop your photography skills at the Zoo. We will travel around the Zoo taking pictures of and creating memories with the amazing animals that live in the warm tropics, the deep sea, and the frosty forests of Minnesota and beyond.  Choose some of our favorite pictures and put them together into a travel journal along with other drawings and thoughts to share with friends and family.  We supply the cameras and the inspiration!

Travel Below the Sea – ThursdayDecember 26, 2019
We see the shores and we see the surface, but the world below the sea is a world of mystery and intrigue. Explore, sketch, and identify what lives below without getting wet. From jellyfish to Tiger sharks this adventure will surely swim through your memories as a highlight of your Zoo experiences.

Travel to Africa – Friday, December 27, 2019
Exciting and wild! Africa is full of surprises. Pack what you need for a day of discovery as you look at primates, birds, and other animals that call this amazing continent home. You too may become one of the world’s foremost African animal experts.

Travel to the Tropics – Monday, December 30, 2019
What’s more beautiful than a tropical rainforest teeming with exotic animals? Leave the snow behind and travel to the tropics where birds are calling, frogs are croaking, primates are howling, and insects are marching. This fascinating forest is the perfect place to practice your picture taking skills!

Travel Near and Far – Tuesday, December 31, 2019
No winter is complete without snow and the critters that love it as much as Minnesotans! Travel from Minnesota to Russia and back, to see what makes these lands and animals so similar. They may be oceans apart, but that’s what makes this day so exciting!

Gee, Haw, Mush! – Thursday, December 26, 2019 or Friday, December 27, 2019 or Monday, December 30, 2019 or Tuesday, December 31, 2019 (same camp offered all 4 days)
A true adventure awaits as the Diamond Drift Samoyed Dog Sled team comes with their tails a wagging. Join professional mushers who will pass on the history of dog sledding and discuss equipment, care, and use of dogs in this unique sport. Learn about skiijoring and bikejoring, and find yourself using terms like gangline, tug, bootie, haw, and gee. Your friends will be so jealous when you tell them you went dog sledding at the Minnesota Zoo!
Please note: The same single-day camp is offered each of the 4 days so if you choose to sign up for more than 1 day, they will be repeating the same camp.
