Horizons Outdoor Adventure camps might be the perfect fit for campers, ages 13-16, who want something a little different from “traditional” camp.

Facilitated by highly trained and qualified senior staff and guides, Horizons Adventures takes campers to new heights of adventure, experience, and fun. Adventure campers travel throughout western Virginia and parts of West Virginia as they explore some of the best outdoor adventures the east coast has to offer! Choose from one-week or two-week sessions, and let the adventure begin! Our Challenge-by-Choice philosophy asks each individual camper to set their own individual goals and to appreciate the success of the week regardless of experience or skill level.

(13-14) Potomac Highlands 1-Week Adventure

Get ready for an amazing experience! You will have a chance to explore some of the best outdoor activities West Virginia has to offer. From backpacking to caving and rafting with professional guide, you will have a new and exciting challenge everyday on the trip. This one-week program is all about exploring the outdoors, making new friends, and learning valuable outdoor skills as you road trip your way across “Wild and Wonderful West Virginia”.

Day 1- Arrive at Camp Horizons! Meet your Trip Leaders and fellow campers as you get an introduction to backpacking

Day 2- Go backpacking in the Monongahela National Forest and cooking dinner on backpacking stoves with your tent mates

Day 3- Finish hiking out from your overnight backpacking trip. Then relax at the Seneca Creek swimming Hole before setting up camp at a site with beautiful views of Seneca Rocks

Day 4- Visit a local “wild” cave and explore the natural formations before departing on an epic road trip to the New River Gorge.

Day 5- Meet your professional rafting guide for an orientation to paddling before heading down the New River with all your friends

Day 6- Wake up early and hit the water on a stand-up paddle boarding trip that will take you paddling under a local waterfall. Then load up and head back to camp for one last campfire together and slide show recap of your trip.

Day 7- After breakfast, pack up and say your goodbyes to your trip leaders and the rest of your trip team before heading back home.

(13-14) Potomac Highlands 2-Week Adventure

Fun and adventure are the name of the game as you explore the wilds of West Virginia with us for two whole weeks. During this two week trip, campers will get a deeper look into what West Virginia has to offer as you cover more trails and take on some vertical challenges. From rock climbing and overnight canoeing on the beautiful upper Potomac River, to caving, backpacking and rafting…. You will gain new outdoor skills and experience as you make some awesome memories with your trip team. After two weeks traveling, the only thing you will want to do is take a nap, look at all the awesome photos from your trip, and make plans to come back next year!

Day 1- Arrive at Camp Horizons! Meet your Trip Leaders and fellow campers as you get an introduction to backpacking

Day 2-4– Go backpacking in the Monongahela National Forest. You will spend two nights here heading deep into the woods to a swimming hole with a 30ft waterfall, some of the most amazing star filled skies, and some tasty tail meals that you will help prepare.

Day 5-6– Trade your backpacks for paddles as you swim and paddle your way down the Potomac River on your overnight canoe trip. You will be on the Upper Potomac in an area known for having a ton of Bald Eagles.

Day 7-8– Recharge and relax at Camp Horizons where you will rejoin camp for some weekend activities. Swim in the lake, dive in the pool, and enjoy some front country amenities before heading back out on the road.

Day 9-10– Learn some technical climbing skills as you rock climb, zip line and rappel with the NROCKS Outdoor Center’s Professional climbing guides. We also have a slack-lining lesson/completion at night!

Day 10– After a few days of elevation, explore the world beneath your feet as you adventure underground in one of the local natural caves.

Day 11-12– Grab a paddle and hit the water as you spend two days paddle-boarding and whitewater rafting at on the New River in one in Fayetteville, WV. Voted one of America’s “Best Outdoor Towns”, we will explore the local downtown and history between trips.

Day 13– After breakfast, pack up and say your goodbyes to your trip leaders and the rest of your trip team before heading back home.

(15-16) Harper’s Ferry 1-Week Adventure

From check-in to check out, this trip is a blast. In one week, you will experience the highlights of three different states as we travel between Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. And with so much history along the way, you bound to learn a thing or two while you backpack, kayak, and raft your way from place to place.

Day 1- Arrive at Camp Horizons! Meet your Trip Leaders and fellow campers as you pack together for your backpacking trip and learn to read a map and compass

Day 2- Hit the trails on Great North Mountain. Hike and scramble your way up to a 360-degree view of the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Then setup camp, cook dinner, and learn a little about the constellations over head from your Trip Leaders.

Day 3- Finish your backpacking trip with a nice hike back to the van. Then get comfortable and grab some snacks as we work our way to through the top 40 playlist on our road trip up to Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania.

Day 4– Get up early for a solid breakfast before hitting the river on one of the most unique rafting experiences in the country. Then swing by the local nature center, ice cream parlor, and famous photo spots before calling it a night.

Day 5– After experiencing the Ohiopyle, head to where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. Then put your paddling skills to the test as you kayak through one of he most historic cities in the country.

Day 6– Exchange your paddle for a headlamp and explore the world beneath your feet in a local cave. Then hit a few unique roadside attractions on your way back to camp.

Day 7- One last breakfast as a trip team to share a few laughs and exchange phone numbers before heading home.

(15-16) Harper’s Ferry 2-Week Adventure

Two weeks is the perfect amount of time to take in everything that this area of the country has to offer. Backpacking in Virginia, climbing and zip lining in West Virginia, and rafting, hiking and river sliding in Pennsylvania. This trip is has some awesome components to it that make for a great time. And with a ton of small side stops and road tripping along the way, this trip is bound to be full of some good laughs, fun surprises, and probably a few inside jokes or two.

Day 1- Arrive at Camp Horizons! Meet your Trip Leaders and fellow campers as you pack together for your backpacking trip and learn to read a map and compass

Day 2-4- Hit the trails on Great North Mountain. Take in the views, practice a few stream crossings, and learn “Leave-No-Trace” skills as you work your way up and over the mountain.

Day 5-6– Camp in the shadow of Seneca Rocks as you top rope climb this natural rock formation with some of Virginias most experienced climbing guides. Then hit the local soda stand and cool off in the nearby swimming hole.

Day 7-8– rest and recharge your batteries as you relax by the pool back at Camp Horizons. Join the rest of Camp for a few meals cooked by our camp chef and lounge around camp before hitting the road again.

Day 9-10– Road trip to Ohiopyle, Pennsylvania for a white water experience that is super unique. Then bike around town and on to the C&O canal for a bit before hitting a few Mountain biking trails.

Day 11-13– Arrive in Harper’s Ferry West Virginia for an awesome couple of days caving, kayaking, and epic day hikes. And take in some of the history and local culture of this super historic small town.

Day 14– After breakfast, pack up and say your goodbyes to your trip leaders and the rest of your trip team before heading back home.
